Patterned Rugs If your room has a limited color palette and few textures, a patterned rug is an easy way to add some visual interest to your space. Sarah M. Dorsey Designs used a plywood stencil to paint royal blue medallions on a plain white rug. The result is simple but chic. After seeing a department store rug with a hefty price tag, Jessi of Suzie Studios was determined to create her own version for her home. One white Ikea rug and hours of painting later… and she had a beautiful floral motif rug that fits perfectly in her modern space. Looking for a classic pattern that will never go out of style? Draw some inspiration from this houndstooth beauty from Royal Designs Studio. When painted in tan and white, the pattern acts as a neutral, tying other design elements together. Shake up a room with a dose of vibrant color! The lemon yellow hue of this geometric print rug from Adventures of an Almost 40 Year Old Intern isn’t for the faint of heart. Try a more toned down version in emerald or sky blue. Textured Rugs This rug featured by Scandinavian Deko is ideal for playrooms or nurseries where little hands and feet slide across hard floors. Channel your knitting skills (or those of a crafty friend) to weave up this plush heather gray rug. Be sure to attach carpet grippers to ensure there are no accidents. Handy with a glue gun? This handcrafted medallion rug featured by Shelterness is constructed using rolled jute rope discs. The earthy feel of this rug would make a great addition to a mud room or kitchen. Striped Rugs Even the most hesitant crafters among us could tackle this black and white striped rug by A Beautiful Mess. Broadcloth, a cotton sheet, and some nails are the things you’ll need to hand weave this fun project. Another idea: make a smaller set for your bathroom. The woven texture is perfect for wet feet and will dry quickly. Stripes have never looked so wild! If you’re feeling adventurous or love animal print, this zebra print rug by The Home Depot is right up your alley. For a cooler toned color palette, use silver instead of gold paint. And if you prefer a more traditional look, go for classic black and white. stripes are a trendy take on the classic stripe pattern. This purple and white rug featured by Little Green Notebook uses a dry brush technique for a worn and shabby chic appearance. Change up the design a little by widening or spacing out the chevrons. A Little Bit of Nature Angela of Twelve Oaks Manor needed a low-maintenance, durable rug for her porch. After giving up the hunt for an inexpensive piece, she opted to create one herself. A simple hand-painted motif featuring a bee and laurel leaf on a bamboo rug led to a simple outdoor solution that will last a long time. This gorgeous gray and white rug by Lux Per Diem combines a patterned fabric with a drop cloth to make a gorgeous statement piece.
The Rustic Look One of the current trends in DIY coffee tables is the rustic, worn look of reclaimed wood and industrial hardware. Our first stunning DIY table gives us all of that and more! Created by Dan Faires of HGTV’s online video series DanMade, this table requires only four pieces of reclaimed wood, a few nails, brackets, some sanding, and four casters. In a few simple steps, that basic list is turned into a gorgeous rustic coffee table. Another creative take on the rustic coffee table is this fun wine crate table made by DIY Vintage Chic. Created with crates purchased from the craft store, some vintage wine labels transferred onto the wood, a bit of handmade tea stain, and a few casters on a solid base, this unique table is certainly a beautiful conversation starter. Built entirely from scratch, our next DIY coffee table by Ana White and The Friendly Home is absolutely breathtaking with its rustic hardware and grey weathered finish. This large, sturdy table is certainly meant to be lived on and enjoyed! With its stunning hairpin legs, this simple, elegant coffee table from This Old House is a pretty serious piece of eye-candy! Our next DIY table is perfect for a modern, industrial style home (I’m talking to you lucky loft owners!). Perfect in pairs in order to create a flexible entertaining space, these coffee tables are made with plated slotted angles and a bit of plywood. The project was developed by Lowes and would cost under $100 to complete. Fun With Prints Each of us has seen the $20 Ikea Lack coffee table before (in fact, I used to have one in my living room!), but have you ever seen it looking this fantastic? With some printed wallpaper and nail head trim, Pretty City Things gave this basic Ikea table a fun and glamorous makeover without breaking the bank. n many people’s minds (although I know some of you disagree), one of the main reasons for a coffee table’s existence is to have a place to kick up one’s feet after a long, hard day. So why not make it padded and comfortable…. like, say, an ottoman? Not So Newlywed McGees created a beautiful tufted coffee table ottoman by upgrading an old coffee table with some foam, batting, gorgeous printed fabric, nail head trim, and a lot of love. Re-Purposed Objects Our last few DIY coffee tables are made with miscellaneous objects, resulting in unique and creative furniture. Using a leftover shipping pallet and a custom-cut piece of glass, Paige of Design created this lovely coffee table with rustic charm. By recycling an old wooden spool and inspired by an idea from Country Living, The Crafter’s Cottage made a magnificent library coffee table to show off their favorite books and treasures. Since the entire table is on wheels, you could spin it around every few days to get a new, fresh view of your favorite things! By simply adding four painted legs to the bottom of a vintage suitcase, Ruche Blog devised this radiant and delightful mini coffee table that would be ideal for a small space. Plus, in addition to having a one-of-a-kind table, you would have storage automatically built in! Our final table, hand-crafted by Better Homes and Gardens, stopped me dead in my (internet) tracks because of its beauty. Birch logs and sanded grout were used to construct this incredible, woodsy coffee table, which would look perfectly stunning in my imaginary cabin retreat!

In secret, we agree with some of these attacks on our beloved pets which we consider a part of the family. I mean, be reasonable, don’t you get a little tired of the mess, the grooming, the pet dander and shedding. Well, sometimes a pet needs a little kingdom, a little spot in the house to call all it’s own. Using a few space saving tricks you can turn the indoor dog house into a space saving nook that’s quaint enough it might just persuade your acquaintances to add one more species to their pet list! Built under the alcove a traditional stair case, you can take advantage of unused space and turn it into a suite for your loveable but oversized dog! Get custom made doors that match the interior of the room it open up to, place a pet friendly rug at the entrance and this animal rental place is housing any pet would love to live in! The Bedside Cat Corner At first glance this is just an ordinary box nightstand. Closer inspection reveals that this is a little cubicle for your purring friend who as your constant companion must be near you at all time. On the side furthest from the bed you’ll find a circle entrance/exit onto a fuzzy rug that makes it possible for you cat to have its own quarters and yet be close enough in the anticipation of their nightly need for some TLC. The Play (Bath) Room small space is where they have bathing accommodations and a toy bin to call their own. Sharing with your offspring just hasn’t worked out well for them. Somehow you are not pleased when they lather your newborns toys with some genuine heartfelt slobber. Go figure! And it has access to if not a gated then a protected outdoor area where they can run after sparrows and keep the mice at bay! The Mess Free Dining Station Automatic may be all the rage, but when your pet wants to indulge in a second serving as they see you do so often, well they naturally feel entitled to another heaping as well. This, as you know firsthand, can get messy very fast. There are many improved feeders that literally are spill free and will keep your pet hydrated without the unexpected partial shower.
Pet Proofing:Even if your dog has reach its pinnacle and mid life crises at age five – thirty five if we are counting in dog years – they still can be a big old baby. Your cat may never have outgrown their yarn unwinding habits. In this case, you will always have a baby in the house. Keep wires out of their way, chemicals out of their reach, valuables out of their eyesight and keep both all surfaces and them clean on a regular basis to prevent bacteria and other germs. Once you have finished applying these methods to your home it’s time to set up a play date between the cats and dogs of all your friends. Good thing you pet proofed as this could get interesting. Looney tunes and Tom and Jerry may come to life right before your eyes but it’s all in fun. You’ve upgraded your furry friends’ rent-free space and truly made them a part of you zip code! |
