Blue is the word at CB2 this season, as shown by the assortment of azure pieces below. From dressers to seating, these items add a sophisticated yet radiant touch of color–the perfect solution for an interior that needs a dash of something vibrant. Want to get a jump start on your spring cleaning? Consider purchasing some modular shelving to help you get organized. Bright shades such as orange and white will remind you that spring is around the corner, and by the time it’s here you’ll be that much closer to a tidy interior. Below we see the Elston Engine Modular Shelf, designed by Mark Daniel of Slate Design. These individual L-shaped units are crafted of engineered wood with a bright matte finish. Combine them to create something special. We recently featured the Herman Miller Select Eames Wire Base Low Table in our post on new colorful furniture finds. Available in primary colors, these modern tables are just 10 inches high. Their industrial yet mellow construction is influenced by Japanese forms. Buy one, or purchase a group and arrange them to create an eye-catching centerpiece in the middle of the room! Consider updating your seating with a bright upholstered piece, such as one of the radiant selections offered at Jonathan Adler. In fact, many of Adler’s pieces are available in a wide range of colors, so you can find the perfect winter-to-spring shade for your space. In fact, below we see the power of upholstered furniture in a private New York residence with interior design by none other than Jonathan Adler. There’s just something about bright orange, don’t you think?! Rugs and Pillows As the seasons change, many interior design lovers switch out their textiles to capture the mood of the moment. Winter is still in the air, yet there is a hint of the brilliant color that will soon blanket the outdoors. Which is why royal blue is the perfect shade for this transitional time. After all, it’s bright without knocking you over. Below we wee the Abacus Dhurrie in Regal Blue fromWest Elm. Made in India, this handcrafted piece is 80% wool and 20% cotton. For a rug in a lighter blue, check out the Casablanca Dhurrie Rug from Z Gallerie, showcased in the room below. The geometric pattern mimics the look of tile while brightening your interior with the color of the sky: What’s the perfect complementary color for blue? Orange! Don’t hesitate to combine these two shades in your interior. They are some of this year’s most popular hues. In the next featured living room, we see the Velvet Orange Floor Pillow and the practical comfort it can add to your space. This tufted square is finished in a raw edge for a contemporary look. We also love the blue Seismic Rug that ties this room together Why not add a festive pillow to your sofa to welcome the new season? The Love Birds Silk Pillow Cover is decorated with an image based on an original watercolor design. The blooms on this pure silk piece could almost look like snowflakes falling behind the perched birds. But as you look a little closer, you see the outline of whimsical flowers. Winter or spring, this pillow is perfect! [from West Elm] Don’t forget to celebrate the outdoors as you start spending more time on your patio or porch. Now may be the time to freshen those outside chairs with a new accent, such as the La Mer White Outdoor Pillow shown below. Crafted of spun polyester, this cushy find can be used indoors as well! Lime Green and Cobalt Blue We begin with an all-time color duo favorite: lime green and cobalt blue. Classy and elegant, this combination blends a verdant shade from nature with a rich azure hue. And as you can see in the elegant dining room below, you can always throw in a second accent shade, such as violet.[photo by Eric Piasecki, from Katie Ridder Homes]. We now indulge in one exterior shot, simply because lime green and cobalt blue are often used in outdoor settings, especially poolside. And why not? The color duo is a striking one, and it reinforces two of natures most prevalent color families. Below we see lime umbrellas and cobalt pots holding chartreuse greenery. [from Pool Environments] Emerald Green and Orange We now move to some of the hottest colors in today’s design climate: emerald green and orange. In fact, Emerald Green is Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2013. And we can see why. This refreshing shade pops against white, and it sings beautifully when juxtaposed with orange, as shown in the next image. [from Larry Hanna Photography]. Don’t forget that this amazing color duo can even be effective in small doses. Below we see a rust orange chair against the wall and an emerald green pillow casually resting on a desk chair. Patterned curtains reinforce this winning color combo. [from Hillary Thomas] Teal and Gold Teal blue and gold make a bold statement, and many rooms feature teal as the anchor shade and gold as the accent, as shown below. We love how gold appears on artwork, tables, rug, wall and greenery! That soothing teal wall is the perfect backdrop, don’t you think? [from Busybee Design]. In the next image, a teal blue rug is mirrored by the artwork’s main hue, and golden dining room upholstery is reinforced by a trio of tabletop vases. Pure design bliss! [from Chris Barrett Design] Salmon and Light Blue Salmon is such a versatile color! Not only does it cover the walls of many a formal living room, it can be presented in a low-key setting as well. In fact, many tropical, beachy motifs utilize salmon. This color really pops when combined with an icy blue, as shown in the casual modern living room in the next featured image. [from Envi Design]. A bedroom pillow in the lightest of blues is the perfet accent to salmon walls, lamps and cushions. Note how many shades of blue grace this space. Check out the hint of aqua on the bed throw, and that headboard just might be embellished in navy. [from Lucy and Company] Violet and Red“Violet and red?” You betcha! We save the most unexpected color combo for last, and we’re sure this duo will not disappoint. We often see purples and yellows paired, but what if you combined a striking violet with a bold shade of red? Below we see purple patterned wallpaper in a dining area, as well as rich red dining chairs. Note how shades of violet and red are also present in the living room, further reinforcing this color combination. [from Valerie Pasquiou Interiors + Design, Inc.]. Violet and red can be decadent in the bedroom, especially if amethyst tones on the bedding are contrasted with deep red lamp shades, as well as a dark red rug. We love how muted red covers an accent wall, and how the color combo shows up on two bed pillows to tie it all together. [from Allegro Design via Houzz]. We end with a reminder that sometimes a striking color combo can be as simple as buying a few tabletop smalls. In the dining room below, plush violet chairs are a beautiful contrast to rich red tableware, especially against a crisp background of black and white. [from Last Detail Interior Design] Were you inspired by any of today’s color combinations? We could see all of these taking center stage in a variety of interiors, from the most modern to the most elegant. Colors have a way of stimulating the senses and conjuring creativity. When choosing a color duo, go with shades that you love.
A clean home is a happy home – or so the old adage goes. For those of us who can’t stand the sight of a coffee ring on a countertop or a speck of pet hair on the sofa, a clean home also translates into personal happiness and a reduced stress level. However, even the most militant of clean freaks often forget one important spot: light fixtures. In addition to being an eyesore to all who notice, a dusty and dirty light fixture also gives off less light, but a quick cleaning can help to brighten a room. Here are a few tricks and tips for cleaning your home’s light fixtures. 1) If possible, remove the glass part of the fixture and clean it separately. Fill up a sink with warm, soapy water and allow the glass to sit for several minutes. Then wipe the glass clean with a sponge and seat upon a towel to dry. You may want to also polish the glass off with a soft cotton cloth to avoid any residue. 2) To clean light bulbs, make sure the lights have been unplugged and switched off long enough to cool. Then, wipe them down with a soft rag. A simple duster may suffice, but only if the lights have been recently cleaned. If there are layers of dust, a lightly dampened cloth may be the only option. 3) Cleaning chandeliers, however, can prove a slightly more difficult process. First, clean the entire fixture with a duster. Next, lay an absorbent towel or cloth below the chandelier and spray with a cleaning solution – such as white vinegar and water. Allow the fixture to drip the dirty cleaner onto the towel below until dry. One thing to keep in mind is that the more you dust, the less work it will be to clean your lighting fixtures. By adding this process to your weekly cleaning routine, you can enjoy sparkling fixtures and bright light all year round.
Traditional Wedding Table Decor with a Twist We begin with charming wedding decor that puts a new spin on the traditional. Are you drawn to the softness of subtle colors such as peaches and creams? At the New York City wedding below, light shades lend an elegant touch to a table holding place cards. Note how roses have been arranged at the base of an artistic branch, as well as on the upward-reaching arms. [fromRuffled] Another clever wedding decor idea involves a monochromatic centerpiece, as showcased in the violet arrangement below. An urn holds an overflowing collection of blooms that boasts shades ranging from lavender to maroon. [from The Byrd Collective] If the subtle and the monochromatic don’t pack enough of a punch for your taste, try celebrating the vivid. This pink and orange table decor is headlined by a golden urn of rosy ranunculus, as well as an urn of fresh oranges. Glassware in pink and gold brings out the table’s vibrant colors, as do textiles in striking patterns. [from The Byrd Collective] For wedding decor as decadent as the food itself, go with lush, colorful arrangements. Vintage containers keep it interesting. In this photo by She-N-He Photography and Design, decorative details styled by Camille Styles are complemented by flowers from The Byrd Collective. [from The Everygirl] Your vintage finds shouldn’t be limited to vases. Other unique pieces can add an element of whimsy, especially when dispersed at tables and incorporated into the decor. After all, a conversation piece is a great way to encourage your wedding guests to socialize with one another. [from Ruffled] Another wedding decor strategy: choose rich tones that add an element of decadence to your wedding tables. Note the deep shades and interesting color combinations in the floral arrangements and cake table below. [from She-N-He Photography and Design] Personalize your wedding table decor with an assortment of DIY items, from terrariums to unique floral arrangements in interesting containers. At the Art Deco-style wedding below, colors such as silver, gold, peach and olive green add interest, as do handmade touches. [from Ruffled] In another view of the same wedding, we see hand screenprinted napkins, as well as a handmade paper flags. In fact, the bride created many of the event’s DIY flourishes. If you enjoy putting your own special touch on your entertaining endeavors, don’t hesitate to create one or two crafty features that can be incorporated into your wedding table decor. Your guests will definitely take note! [from Ruffled] Bright and Modern Wedding Table DecorWe now move from the more traditional to the modern. We start with a colorful reminder that sometimes it’s all about the dessert! To make a big impression, combine bold shades and trends, such as ombre style and vivid blues and greens. [from Confetti Pop] don’t hesitate to juxtapose the trendy with the classic, as shown in this wedding table from Confetti Pop. Note how a beloved chevron pattern is dressed up with peach flowers and candles that cast a warm, bright glow on the event: We now see a dessert table from the same event. Many brides and grooms as opting for dessert buffets featuring not only cake, but an assortment of delectable treats in candy-colored hues. The goal: to have so many goodies available, guests don’t know what to taste first! Want a wedding display that’s truly unexpected? Incorporate bold patterns and motifs into the mix. In the image below, we see a geometric wedding table featuring a diamond-patterned runner, an abundance of pinks and purples, and edgy heart place cards that decorate favor boxes. [from Confetti Pop via 100 Layer Cake] In a close-up of the same table, we see unusual floral touches in a bold centerpiece. Spray-painted cactus creates an unforgettable element in this unique arrangement, while a turquoise planter serves as a powerful contrast to the rosy blooms: We now zoom in for a close-up of the same table, and we’re treated to an undeniably glorious combination: unusual flowers, colorful textiles and decadent consumables. Yet this table display defies expectation by combining yellows, blues and pinks in the most artistic of spreads.
While having décor and design you’re proud to share with guests is extremely important, the comfort of your living space still reigns supreme. Unfortunately, in many cases, marrying style and comfort can be a bit difficult – especially when some of the most high fashion choices are the least usable. In order to help you create a fashionable and cozy space, here are four easy tricks1) KEEP BLANKETS AND PILLOWS AT HAND. A decorative basket can be a great place to store additional blankets and throws in your living room, bedroom or guest room. Even if they’re only used once or twice on the chilliest of nights, they will make your living space feel cozy and relaxed. 2) KEEP IT ORGANIZED. Clutter can make both you and your guests instantly anxious and uncomfortable, so eliminate this problem by attacking the clutter head on and tossing out as much as possible. Invest in organizational tools such as baskets, shelving units and furniture with hidden storage. By ridding your home of unnecessary junk, you will feel much more at ease. 3) SELECT PUSH SEATING. One drawback to the mid-century modern furniture craze is that these pieces can be a bit small – and many of the sofa and chair designs have stiff, low backs. Although they’re great for offices and secondary seating options, they’re not exactly the best option for settling in for a movie and popcorn. On the other hand, full, plush furniture with extra cushions offer the comfort you desire. 4) DON’T CROWD YOUR SPACE. Like clutter, too many elements in one room can make you feel as though you’re suffocating. Displaying too many framed photos or pieces of wall art, various knick-knacks and other such items will stifle comfort. Similarly, too many conflicting colors can also shrink your space. Keep it simple. Get rid of unnecessary décor, and you’ll instantly enjoy more breathing room.
Convertible Sofa BedsWe begin with the Staple Bed by Alexander Seifried. Below we see the piece with a red frame, but this convertible bed is also available in black or white. The furnishing is a stylish sofa by day. [from Richard Lampert] Push them together, and you create a generous double bed built for comfort. Don’t forget that you can also get the “bed effect” by leaving this furnishing in sofa formation. Simply remove the backrest, and you have a twin bed sleeping experience! When extra company arrives, you also have the option of arranging this piece into two separate beds, clearly apart from one another, as shown below. Which is why this convertible item is absolutely perfect for kids’ rooms. Your little one will always be prepared to accommodate a friend for a sleepover! Next we see the Twilight Sleeper Sofa in Cento Fabric, likely the inspiration for the previous sofa. Designed by Flemming Busk, this item won a Danish design contest with its stunning cylinder and rectangle design. Not to mention, it can be converted into a daybed, a queen-sized bed or two twin beds with a few simple adjustments. [from Design Within Reach] Seating-Bed Transformations
